I am always looking for the "Sweet Spot" in life. You know, it's that place where you believe, "If I can get everything in my life just right...I'll have it made". It's that place where you get in the groove of success and just cruise in sublime peace. In the "Sweet Spot" I see myself walking though life without thought or worry, no bumps or ugly occurrences in my path. I just know I could do it, if only this problem, or that issue were under control. I could have a life without pain. I could live a life without problems.
It doesn't seem that such a thing is God's idea of a perfect life. The book of Isaiah chapter 43 says: "But now, thus says the Lord who created you, O Jacob, and He who formed you O Israel: Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name, You are Mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned. Nor shall the flame scorch you. For I am the Lord you God, The Holy One of Israel, you Savior..."
What does God mean when he says "When you pass through the waters?" Do we have to pass through difficulty? I hate to say it, but I just don't see, in the history of human existence, where life is without trouble. Jesus said in John 16:33: "These things I have spoken to you that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." DID HE SAY TRIBULATION? Did He say "will have tribulation"? Paul says, "Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, I run the race." Life is a race. Races are ugly, sweating, out of breath, gritty, full of pain. We forget the pain when we cross that finish line and collapse in exhaustion. He has redefined my concept of the "Sweet Spot", and it's much more satisfying.
When trouble comes your way – Instead of fixing your heart, or your eyes on peace, contentment, fulfillment and the pursuit of perfection, fix you eyes on the ONE who is peace, on the One who brings contentment, on Him who is perfection. Fix your eyes and heart on real relationship. Relationship is dialogue, friendship, learning about HIM, and obeying HIM. With Jesus, you receive those things you are longing for as a by product of knowing HIM.
God is not pursuing our perfection. He knows he has already accomplished that in the work of the cross. God is pursuing our hearts. He wants us to talk to Him, listen to Him, obey Him. It is because of, and through, that relationship to Jesus, that we are perfected. That is where we find our Sweet Spot.
Trouble is guaranteed. Upheaval and pain are a certainty, but when you hold the hand of the ONE who has already won... Peace is a wonderful by product.
